In an email sent to employees on June 3, Provost Peter Stearns and Senior Vice President Morrie Scherrens announced that Mason will provide a salary increase to employees hired on or before May 25, 2011. The increase will show up in paychecks beginning Sept. 16, 2011.

“Mason believes that it is critical to our institutional well-being that we provide some improvement to compensation,” the administrators wrote in the email. The increase will “at least partially address the high cost of living in Northern Virginia,” they explained, since the state was unable to provide any funding in FY 2012 for a statewide salary increase.

The specific amount of the increase, which was approved by Mason’s Board of Visitors in May, will vary according to employee salary level and category. A detailed FAQ explains the specifics.

In the email, Stearns and Scherrens expressed appreciation for employees’ understanding during the recent budget crunch.

“We’ve weathered substantial reductions in funding support, but in true Mason fashion we have pulled together, made the necessary sacrifices, kept our sense of humor and remained focused on our core mission. Your flexibility and perseverance have been instrumental in helping Mason manage these budgetary challenges while maintaining institutional momentum,” they wrote.
