The athletic season gets underway today as the George Mason women’s soccer team takes on Navy at 4 p.m. at George Mason Stadium. Head coach Jac Cicala is gunning for his 100th career victory.
Cicala enters his ninth year at the helm of the women’s soccer team with a 99 to 56 to 15 record, and his .626 winning percentage ranks him among the winningest active coaches in Division I.
George Mason and Navy met for the first time in school history last season with the Midshipmen earning a 2 to 0 victory. The Patriots return 16 letterwinners and 10 starters from last year’s 9-11 team. George Mason is 8 to 9 to 1 in all-time season openers and 13 to 5 in home openers.
The Patriots return last season’s leading scorer Katy Robertson, a Soccer Buzz Preseason All-American. The junior set a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and school record with 60 points on 23 goals and 14 assists. A two-time All-CAA selection, she enters the campaign with 105 career points, 63 shy of the school record. Robertson is currently on a nine-game point scoring streak and a six-game goal-scoring streak, dating back to 1999.
Other top returners for the Patriots include sophomore Angela Lombardi, who posted seven goals and five assists, and defenders Erika Webster and Stephanie Hancock. Webster earned second-team All-CAA honors, while Hancock was named All-Virginia.
The Patriots continue the weekend on the road in a 1 p.m. Sunday matchup at Penn State. The Nittany Lions advanced to the Final Four last season, finishing with a 21 to 4 to 1 record.
