At its meeting on May 4, Mason’s Board of Visitors (BOV) approved the university’s operating budget for 2011-12, which calls for a 5.7 percent hike for in-state students, including tuition, fees, room and board. The increase is 5 percent for out-of-state students.
Of the Virginia public institutions that have announced tuition increases for next year, Mason’s increase is the second lowest.
Rector Ernst Volgenau also announced that the BOV had developed a process for a search to replace President Alan Merten, who will step down next year. The presidential search committee will be headed by BOV member Lovey Hammel and will have representatives from the BOV, the faculty, the staff, the student body and alumni.
The BOV also approved a six-year capital outlay plan, which is detailed online.
In other action, the BOV
- Selected two new student representatives to the BOV, Rachel Bruns and Andrias White
- Approved a new MS in Health Informatics to be offered by the Department of Health Administration and Policy in the College of Health and Human Services
- Conferred emeritus status for Communication professors Sheryl Friedley and William J. McAuley, effective May 25
- Provisionally approved changes to the Faculty Handbook (if no objections are raised by BOV members as of June 15, the proposed changes will go into effect)
