Mary Ann Braun joined Student Health Services last week as its new director. Ellen Dawson, the previous director of Student Health Services, earned her Ph.D. in Nursing in May and has joined the College of Nursing and Health Science as assistant dean for graduate programs and research.
Braun comes to George Mason from a seven-year tenure as coordinator of the Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center at Georgetown University’s Vincent T. Lombardi Cancer Center. She also was an instructor in the Georgetown School of Medicine’s Division of Hematology and Oncology, and a clinical associate in Georgetown’s School of Nursing. Before her job at Georgetown, Braun was vice president and director of health care for the Klemm Analysis Group in Washington, D.C. She earned her bachelor of science in nursing from West Texas A&M University and her master of science in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she also completed the nurse practitioner program in women’s health.
Among Braun’s plans for Student Health Services are a renovation and expansion on the Fairfax Campus and the addition of services on the Arlington Campus. Student Health Services already has a presence on the Prince William Campus.
Braun says she is thrilled to be at George Mason. “When you come from an environment that deals primarily with disease, it’s exciting to be given an opportunity to provide services and educational programs that focus on health and wellness,” she says. “The combination of an educational environment and the absence of serious or life-threatening disease provides what I call a ‘double whammy.’ With a double whammy, the challenge focuses mostly on instilling in students the need to learn. Once this has occurred, there’s an opportunity to influence their choices and health habits for life.”
