Games against three postseason participants from last season highlight the 2000-2001 men’s basketball schedule. The Patriots play 13 games at the Patriot Center, including 2 preseason exhibition games.
George Mason plays this year’s postseason National Invitational Tournament (NIT) participants New Mexico and Delaware on Nov. 13 and Nov. 25, respectively, in addition to playing Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champion and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament participant UNC Wilmington twice, on Jan. 6 and Feb. 5. George Mason’s trip to New Mexico opens the 2000-2001 season and marks its third appearance in a national preseason tournament.
The Patriots, who were 19 to 11 overall and 12 to 4 in the CAA, and finished in a tie for first place with James Madison last season, also have the potential to meet Temple or Delaware in the second round of the Preseason NIT, and they could play Stanford in the Cable Car Classic at Santa Clara University. Both Stanford and Temple advanced to the 32nd round in the NCAA Tournament last season.
In addition to its two games against UNC Wilmington, George Mason will play each of the other seven CAA teams twice, home and away, in its 16-game conference schedule. The CAA Tournament will be held at the Richmond Coliseum March 3 to 5.
Head coach Jim Larranaga returns three starters from last year’s team, including two-time CAA “Player of the Year” senior George Evans. Evans averaged 18.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game last season, leading the CAA in rebounding, and ranking second in scoring. The other returning starters are Erik Herring, a second-team All-CAA selection last year who averaged 13.6 points per game, and Tremaine Price, who averaged 6.4 points per game and led the Patriots with 2.9 assists per game.
