Home games against 3 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament teams and 2 top-25 teams highlight the 2000-2001 George Mason women’s basketball schedule. The Patriots will play 14 games in the Patriot Center, including 2 games during their second annual Comfort Inn-University Center/Patriot Thanksgiving Classic.
George Mason opens its home schedule on Nov. 20 against 2000 NCAA Tournament participant St. Francis (Pa.). The Patriots also host NCAA Tournament teams Duke (Dec. 3) and Old Dominion (Jan. 18 and Feb. 25). Both Duke and Old Dominion finished last season with top-25 rankings at No. 11 and No. 12, respectively.
The Patriots, who finished last season with a 10 to 19 overall record and a 5 to 11 record in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), meet Portland State in the first round of the Comfort Inn-University Center/Patriot Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 24. The tournament’s consolation and championship games on Nov. 25 are followed by a 7:30 p.m. game between George Mason’s men’s basketball team and Delaware. The women’s team also competes in the Gatorade Holiday Classic at the University of Miami on Dec. 28 and 29. The Patriots’ nonconference slate also includes Morgan State (Nov. 18), Georgetown (Nov. 29), Delaware (Dec. 6), Manhattan (Dec. 21), and Lafayette (Jan. 2).
In addition to its two games against Old Dominion, George Mason plays each of the other seven CAA teams twice, home and away, in its 16-game conference schedule. The CAA Tournament is scheduled for March 8 to 10 at the Old Dominion field house in Norfolk, Va.
Head coach Debbie Taneyhill returns two starters from last year’s team, including two-time first-team All-CAA and All-Virginia selection Jen Surlas. Surlas led the CAA in conference-only scoring and in 3-point field goals. She averaged 16.9 points per game against all opponents. Sophomores Khalilah Smith and Shelbylynn McBride also return for the Patriots. For information on basketball season tickets, call x33270. Single-game tickets go on sale Oct. 31.
