George Mason police officer Stuart Strange, a seven-year veteran of the department, won the gold medal last month at the Canadian-American Police and Fire Games: Toughest Competitor Alive (TCA) competition. Strange beat out 36 other officers from both countries in the 200-pound-and-over division in Milwaukee, WI, to claim first place. He now is training to compete in the World Games Police Olympics to be held in Indianapolis, IN, next year.
Strange, who weighed in at just over 200 pounds and was the lightest officer in his division, placed in the top two in five of the eight consecutive events in the competition. He won the three-mile run (19 minutes, 46 seconds), 100-meter dash (11.9 seconds), and the rope climb (7.9 seconds); and he finished second in the pull-ups event (28) and the obstacle course (1 minute, 19 seconds). Strange also performed well in the shot put (27 feet, 10 inches), 100-meter swim (1 minute, 19 seconds), and the bench press (285 pounds).
“I trained incredibly hard to compete in the TCA Games,” says Strange, who was the only university police officer participating. “It was my first time there, and the other guys were telling me how there is at least a four or five-year learning curve to be competitive in the events. This is my biggest accomplishment since coming to George Mason.”
Strange also was the winner of the first Virginia Top Cop Fitness Challenge held last October. The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services competition pits officers from police departments across the state in an agility course, one-minute timed sit ups, pull ups, one-repetition maximum bench press, a sit and reach flexibility test, and a 1.5-mile run.
“David Bever was instrumental to my success in both of the competitions,” says Strange. “He motivated me and helped me train.” Bever, a faculty member in the Health, Fitness, and Recreation Resources department, helped launch the Top Cop program.
Following his gold medal performance, Strange celebrated with fellow George Mason officer June Lally the next day when they exchanged wedding vows. The couple has now been married three weeks.
