International Week Panel to Discuss How Social Media Empower Democracy

Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube may not be the reason for the wave of democratic revolution sweeping across Northern Africa and the Middle East, but they are certainly the platform for giving voice to a previously unheard public outcry.

As part of International Week, Mason’s Department of Communication and the Center for World Religions, Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution (CRDC) in the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution are combining with Al Jazeera-English to present a timely panel discussion, “From Revolution to Evolution: How Emerging Media Empower Democracy,” on Monday, April 11, from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the Johnson Center Cinema.

The panel, moderated by communication professor Stephen Farnsworth, will include:

  • Tony Burman, chief strategic advisor in the Americas for Al Jazeera-English
  • Marc Gopin, CRDC director
  • Gary Kreps, chair of the Department of Communication

Admission is free. For additional information, please contact Steve Klein at sklein1@gmu.edu.
