SkillPort, an online learning portal for training and on-the-job support tools that can enhance your business and technical skills, is now available to the campus community through Mason’s Training and Certification Office.

SkillPort can be accessed for free any time of the day or night and can be used to create a customized learning plan. More than 250 classes in such areas as basic computing, advanced programming, Internet concepts and general office skills are available.

Following is an example of one of the programs.

Interpersonal Communication: Being Approachable

Benefits of being approachable

Trust and sharing
The more approachable you are, the more permission you give people to share their thoughts and feelings with you. When people feel safe and welcome, they develop trust toward you. With trust, you build better relationships and learn more about others’ roles and perspectives in the
organization.

Critical information and feedback
If you welcome feedback, others will be willing to give it. You gain helpful — perhaps crucial — information through feedback. Negative feedback is more difficult to give than positive feedback, but the easier you are to approach, the more honest feedback from others will be.

Opportunities
You gain more opportunities when you are approachable. By reaching out, you get to know people and, as a result, you learn what they have to offer you. If you’re approachable, people you know feel comfortable mentioning new possibilities.

Improved relationships
By being approachable, you may win more business for your company. Customers feel more comfortable and confident about buying from you or asking for your assistance. They develop loyalty and trust toward people, not companies.

Typically, people aren’t either totally approachable or totally unapproachable. They may be quite approachable in some contexts and less so in others. Finding the strengths and weaknesses in your own approachability can help you to develop it further.
