Sheryl Beach, Geography and Earth Science, has been appointed as George Mason’s first associate provost for general education.
As a member of the Provost’s Office senior staff, Beach will work in close cooperation with faculty committees on general education and will provide leadership, vision, and direction to the university’s general education program. The newly created position calls for Beach to work closely with deans, associate deans, and faculty members, and also to chair the curriculum committee charged with establishing criteria for courses eligible to satisfy each of the requirements comprising the general education program.
Since joining George Mason in 1993 as a geography professor, Beach has held faculty appointments in Environmental Science and Public Policy (ESPP) and Women’s Studies. She has served as the Geography and Earth Science Department undergraduate coordinator, and on several committees, including the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Council Curriculum Committee, CAS Environmental Science Curriculum Committee, ESPP Committee on Undergraduate Curriculum in the Environment, and CAS/New Century College Interim Curriculum Review Committee.
A second new Provost’s Office appointment, for the position of associate provost for education programs, will be announced later this summer.
