Early Monday, Nov. 15, hackers began assaulting Mason’s homepage (www.gmu.edu) with a “denial of service” attack. The denial of service attack is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. This attack disrupted Mason’s homepage, keeping it from functioning properly.
Mason’s network engineers were able to determine that the attack was being sent from within Mason’s wireless network. To stop the attack, all access to Mason’s homepage from the wireless network was turned off temporarily. This may have impacted members of the Mason community. Wireless access was restored later that evening after remedial steps were taken.
The ITU Support Center is notified first when such incidents occur. As always, feel free to contact the Support Center at 703-993-8870 or firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions or concerns regarding access.
