At the Sept. 29 University and Community Forum held at the City of Fairfax City Hall, President Alan Merten signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will create the new George Mason University Fairfax Campus Advisory Board.

Sharon Bulova, chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and Robert Lederer, mayor of the City of Fairfax, also signed the MOU.

The advisory board, to include five members from the county, five members from the city and three members from Mason, aims to “foster open communication, the timely sharing of information and a collaborative decision-making process.”

The advisory board’s mission is to

  • Identify and support partnerships in support of joint university-community initiatives. These might include research projects, contracts, and economic development.
  • Provide advice and counsel to the university regarding community-university issues and relations.
  • Address and resolve issues of community and university concern.

Mason Chief of Staff Tom Hennessey; Traci Claar, director of community relations; and Cathy Wolfe, director of campus planning, will serve on the board. Other board members are Bulova, or her designee; Braddock District Supervisor John Cook, or his designee; and Lederer, or his designee. Other members have not yet been appointed.

The board is to meet at least twice annually.
