Even Hall of Fame football players have to work hard to stay fit, and Darrell Green, a former Redskins cornerback, is no exception.

Green says he knows how difficult it can be to get motivated and stay active, especially for older adults. That’s why Green, who turned 50 years old this year, decided to team up with Inova Health System and Mason to lead a new fitness campaign called “FitFor50.”

FitFor50 is an interactive, web-based fitness program designed to challenge and motivate participants of all ages to do at least one physical activity for 50 consecutive days. The program officially kicked off last month. Thus far, more than 5,000 people have registered.

Registration is free on the FitFor50 website, where participants each receive a personal playbook to help set goals and track progress.

Green decided to partner with Mason because he is well-acquainted with administrators here and has been training at Mason fitness facilities for years.

FitFor50 members will have the chance to meet Green on Sunday, Oct. 10, as his program teams up with the Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children for a family fitness day, including an 8K and 2K family run/walk on Mason’s Fairfax Campus. Green will lead groups through a variety of fun fitness activities.

In addition to the Star Kid 8K Race and Family Fun Run, activities include team race competitions, musical entertainment, a moonbounce, face painting, sports clinics and prizes. All of the Washington Nationals Presidents will be on hand, in addition to the Mason Patriot, to cheer on the runners.

The event will take place between 8 a.m. and noon in Parking Lot L, across from the Patriot Center. The races will begin at 8 a.m.

On-site registration is $25 for ages 13 and up. All proceeds will benefit the Pediatric Heart Program at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children to support children with chronic heart defects.
