Board of Visitors Meets

The George Mason University Board of Visitors held its first meeting of the 2010–11 year on Sept. 29.

Among the action items the board approved were the following:

  • Renaming the Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering the Volgenau School of Engineering
  • Consolidating the Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and the Department of Molecular and Microbiology and creating a new School of Systems Biology within the College of Science
  • Establishing a new degree, the Master of Engineering in Geotechnical, Construction and Engineering (GeoConStruct) within the Department of Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering

These items now go to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) for approval.

Rector Ernst Volgenau also announced that the board had extended President Alan Merten’s contract to serve as president through July 2013.
