Q&A on MASONLIVE, the New Student E-Mail System

The following information was provided by the Information Technology Unit.
It seems like everywhere you look these days, you see the word MASONLIVE. Here is a brief explanation of MASONLIVE to clear up some basic questions you may be having about it.
What in the world is MASONLIVE?
MASONLIVE is the new official e-mail system for Mason students powered by Microsoft Outlook Live. It replaces the student’s MEMO (Mason Enterprise Messaging Online) mail system account.
Why are the students getting a new e-mail system, but not the faculty and staff?
There are two reasons why faculty and staff members will continue to use MEMO mail. First, the commonwealth of Virginia and Mason regulations require employee e-mail to be hosted at George Mason University. Second, Microsoft offered the service only to Mason students and alumni.
Why are you telling me about this?
We want all faculty and staff members to be aware that when they receive e-mail from students, it may be coming from a @masonlive.gmu.edu e-mail address. This is a valid and official Mason e-mail address (just like @gmu.edu). You do not have to do any updates to your e-mail mailing lists at this time — mail sent to the student’s @gmu.edu e-mail address will be forwarded automatically to their @masonlive.gmu.edu e-mail address.
All new students at Mason are currently using the MASONLIVE e-mail system, and all returning students will be switching to MASONLIVE during the first half of the fall semester. The Information Technology Unit will keep you informed about the switch and will let you know when you should update your e-mail mailing lists.
