After claiming its second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season title last season, the men’s basketball team will participate in the 2000 Preseason National Invitation Tournament (NIT), marking the third time in the team’s history it has appeared in a preseason tournament.
“We’re very excited to be a part of this prestigious event,” says Jim Larranaga, head men’s basketball coach. “The preseason NIT features an outstanding field, and we are honored to represent the CAA.”
Former preseason NIT champions Duke and Indiana, along with 2000 National Collegiate Athletic Association participants Pepperdine, Temple, and Texas, highlight the field. Also featured in the nation’s premier preseason event is New Mexico, a finalist in the 1987 Big Apple NIT and a 2000 postseason NIT participant. Other postseason NIT teams from this past year include Villanova from the Big East, California from the PAC 10, Princeton from the Ivy League, Marquette from Conference USA, and Delaware from America East. Other participants are Fairfield from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Mississippi State from the Southeastern Conference, Navy from the Patriot League, and first-time entry South Alabama from the Sun Belt Conference.
The games will be played on a regional basis throughout the nation, with the semifinal and championship doubleheaders taking place in New York’s Madison Square Garden. The brackets and dates for the tournament will be released at a later date.
