Karenne Wood, an English graduate student in the creative writing program, has won a First Book Award for her first book of poetry, Markings on Earth. Presented by North American Native Authors, the award for a first book by a North American native author is named for Louis Littlecoon Oliver, a Muskogee elder whose first book was not published until he was in his 70s.

Wood’s book will be published by the SunTrack series of the University of Arizona Press. Wood travels to Oklahoma in May to accept the award–a $500 cash prize.
