George Mason’s Best Buddies program is the recipient of the 2000 Fairfax County Volunteer Service Award in the Youth Group category for its partnership with the Fairfax County Mental Retardation Program. The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board nominated the program, which features 27 students, for the award.
The mission of Best Buddies is to enhance the lives of people with mental retardation by providing opportunities for socialization. The college buddies offer one-to-one activities that are the building blocks of lasting and meaningful friendships. Activities this year included movie outings, pizza parties, and dances.
“We are very proud of this award,” says senior Betsy Zorio, chapter director for the past three years. “Best Buddies has really grown over the past few years, and every member of the program is deserving of this honor.”
