Men’s basketball player George Evans is the Virginia College Sports Information Directors (VaSID) state Player of the Year, and women’s basketball player Jen Surals was named first-team All-VaSID.
Evans, a junior forward, was voted the top player in the state for the second consecutive year after he averaged 18.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. The honor is in addition to his being named Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Year, first-team all-CAA, all-CAA defensive team, and first-team all-state by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Evans led the CAA in rebounding and field goal percentage (58.3), was second in rebounding, third in steals (1.90) and blocked shots (1.72), and 17th in assists (2.34).
Evans will enter the 2000-01 season as the ninth leading scorer (1,402) and seventh leading rebounder (719) in George Mason history. His 168 career blocked shots rank second and his 161 steals are tied for second.
Surlas, a junior guard, is one of two players to repeat as first-team honorees. She is a first-team All-CAA selection for the second straight time. She had another outstanding season for the Patriots, leading the team in scoring for the second consecutive year. Surlas finished the season ranked second in the CAA, averaging 16.9 points per game, while scoring the most points (490). She also was runner-up for CAA Player of the Year honors behind Old Dominion’s Lucienne Berthieu.
Surlas scored a conference- and personal-high 66 three-pointers (2.3 per game). In the 16 CAA games this year, she averaged a league-high 18.5 points per game. She was ranked third in free throw percentage (.813). This season, Surlas became the 11th player in George Mason history to make more than 1,000 career points, and she now has 1,080 points.
