Josephine Wiecks, a program support technician for the Systems Engineering and Operations Research (SEOR) Department, has been chosen as the April Employee of the Month.
Because SEOR is located on the first floor of Science and Tech II, students often wander in looking for help on a variety of university-wide questions. “Josephine always works at finding the right person to direct the student or visitor to, provides forms for them, and in general provides whatever assistance is needed,” says Karla Hoffman, chair of SEOR.
Wiecks doesn’t mind the interruptions in her daily routine–in fact, she enjoys it. “I feel like I make a difference with younger students helping them resolve their problems,” she says, adding, “I feel like a mom to them sometimes.”
Wiecks is responsible for maintaining all of the undergraduate and graduate records for students in SEOR. As a half-time employee, Wiecks gives 100 percent to get the job done quickly and efficiently. “Josephine works additional hours on a regular basis because she is determined to stay up-to-date no matter what,” Hoffman says.
SEOR faculty members are grateful to have such an organized employee in the front office. In 1998, the Systems Engineering and Operations Research departments merged to create SEOR, and Wiecks played a key role in the merger. “From the very first day of the new department, the quality of her work and friendship to all faculty and students has been so important in making our new effort a real success,” says Carl Harris, SEOR.
Wiecks lives in Burke with her husband and two sons. In her free time, she likes to walk around her neighborhood.
