Mike Shanahan, executive vice president and head coach of the Washington Redskins, provided the keynote address at the Volunteer Leadership breakfast on Tuesday, May 11, in Dewberry Hall.

Approximately 150 university leaders and faculty and staff members heard Shanahan speak about building a winning organization.

During his speech, he espoused his four-part leadership philosophy: be passionate about what you do, stay positive, have a plan and persevere.

“Every area of the organization needs to believe,” said Shanahan. “It’s important to set a high standard.”

The event was part of the semiannual Volunteer Leadership series hosted by the Office of University Development.

Attendees include members of the Board of Visitors, Mason Foundation Board of Trustees, Alumni Association board, and school, college, and unit advisory boards as well as university administrative leadership.
