At its meeting on May 5, Mason’s Board of Visitors (BOV) approved the creation of two new departments in the College of Health and Human Services and a new degree in the College of Science.
- The new Department of Nutrition and Food Studies is planned to commence in fall 2011. The department will offer graduate and undergraduate programs in nutrition/dietetics, public health nutrition, food studies and culinary arts. Programs of research in the new department will build on existing faculty work in childhood obesity, maternal and child health, and vulnerable, underserved and disadvantaged groups.
- The new Department of Rehabilitation Science will be formed from the current Center for the Study of Chronic Illness and Disability. The department is planned to launch in fall 2011 with a new PhD in rehabilitation science.
- The Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences has been developed as a response to the national and regional need for more physicians. It is designed to prepare students for medical school admission by strengthening their academic credentials. The proposed program will be offered as a joint degree with Georgetown University and will be implemented in fall 2011.
The new departments and the degree must now be approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
