April is typically one of the busiest months of the year at Mason, and many activities take place before the semester ends. Following are a few academic events scheduled over the next couple of weeks.

  • Monday, April 12: Global Interdisciplinary Programs and the Ali Vural Ak Center for Islamic Studies present a film screening of “New Muslim Cool,” a documentary about Puerto Rican American hip-hop star Hamza Perez, who confronts the post-9/11 world and challenges himself after an FBI raid on his mosque. Also meet special guest Zaheer Ali, an activist, historian and educator who served as senior advisor for the film. The film will be shown at 3:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center Cinema. For more information, contact John Robinson, academic advisor/program assistant for Global Affairs and Global Interdisciplinary Programs.
  • Friday, April 16: The ICAR Undergraduate Program will host its First Annual Undergraduate Spring Conference, “Confronting Major Challenges in the 21st Century.” Undergraduates will address emerging economic, social and transnational issues through panel and poster presentations. Mark L. Schneider, senior vice president and special advisor on Latin America for the Washington advocacy office of the International Crisis Group, is the keynote speaker. The program will be held in the Johnson Center, Dewberry Hall, beginning at 10 a.m. with panel presentations; followed by a poster session at 12:30 p.m., Schneider’s address at 1:30 p.m., and an award ceremony and refreshments at 2:45 p.m. For more information, contact Kristin Moriarty at
