Remember to Dial 10 Digits Starting Today

Effective March 1, all local phone calls made within Northern Virginia must include the area code along with the seven-digit telephone number. Local calls made within area codes 540 and 703 that could previously be dialed with just seven digits now require the full ten-digit number. There are no changes in rates for local calls dialed using the ten-digit dialing–the only change is the number of digits that must be dialed.
Remember to make the change on any equipment that uses pre-programmed telephone numbers, such as modems, fax machines, speed dial, and programmed numbers on office phones. If you have questions about this change in service, or how to re-program your modem or fax machine, contact the UCIS Support Center at x33543 or email@example.com.
In addition, effective April 1, Bell Atlantic will add the new 571 area code as an overlay to the same geographic area served by the 703 area code. As the 703 area code depletes, the 571 area code will be assigned to customers requesting new or additional lines. For more information, visit the Bell Atlantic area code website.
