The MEtc Film Club, the Middle East Studies Program and Global Interdisciplinary Programs will present “Sahra! An Evening of Poetry, Puppetry and Song,” on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Enterprise Hall, Room 80, on the Fairfax Campus.

The event is free and open to the public; pizza and refreshments will be served.

The evening of poetry and puppetry features performances by local, national and international artists hailing from Mexico, Lebanon, Washington, D.C., and North Carolina.

The show will be performed in the spirit of the Lebanese Sahra and the Latin American Tertulia, in which a group of like-minded artists and poets get together for an evening of literary recitals and artistic performances.

Performances include

  • the shadow puppet show “El Pescador y sus Andadas” featuring the Mexican folkloric music of Son Jarocho;
  • The Brothers Harrell, who will present three excerpts from their original “low-tech, erratic, operatic, semi-civilized and demi-rational extravaganza cabaret”;
  • poet/writer Zein El-Amine, who will take the audience on a tour that spans the  Middle East and the Americas through the multimedia accentuated readings of his poetry.
