At its fifth annual career night, the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) invites Mason students to discuss the challenges and opportunities of navigating the arts profession at Arts in the Real World.
The event takes place in the Mason Hall Alumni Atrium on Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus. Arts in the Real World will allow current CVPA students to speak with CVPA alumni and other arts professionals.
“Arts in the Real World provides students a valuable opportunity to interact face-to-face with individuals who have gone through the same struggles and anxieties about entering the workplace,” says Leticia Moreno, development manager for CVPA.
“The speakers at the event will be able to share real-life stories about overcoming various obstacles in their careers and give sound advice on how to network in the arts.”
Throughout the evening, a dinner buffet will be provided as students browse information tables that represent each of the CVPA disciplines: art, dance, music, theater, film and video studies, and arts management. Information about job and internship opportunities, career tracks and portfolio building will also be available.
This year, alumni Cara Tomko, BFA Visual Studies ’04, and Daniel Zook, BFA Dance ’08, will speak to students about their experience at Mason, their careers and about performing and visual arts as a whole. The other speakers are
- William Reeder, dean of CVPA
- Harold Linton, director of the School of Art
- Angela Ilig, career education coordinator and career counselor in University Career Services
Students will also have the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions with alumni and current Mason faculty from various disciplines and engage in career-related discussions. The discussion leaders for the breakout sessions are
- Al Morrow, BFA Graphic Design ’07
- Sarah Bright Yaneza, MA Arts Management ’07
- John Kocur, BM Music ’06
- Becky Varni, BA Film and Video Studies ’08
- Heather Knox, BA Theater ’99
Arts in the Real World is sponsored by the CVPA Alumni Chapter and University Career Services.
