On Jan. 1, Janette Muir became interim dean of New Century College (NCC). Muir, an associate professor in the Department of Communication, succeeds John O’Connor, who has taken leave for one year to work at the American Association of Higher Education on a national initiative to create learning communities in higher education.
As interim dean, Muir is working closely with the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the provost, and the Board of Visitors to facilitate a smooth transition of New Century College into the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition, she continues to fulfill the responsibilities she had in her previous position as NCC associate dean. She’s busy, she says, but she’s enjoying it. “New Century College is a great place to work. Everyone is very supportive.”
Muir remains interim dean until July 1, when the transition becomes effective. At that time, an interim associate dean for New Century College will be appointed, and a national search will be launched for the permanent position of associate dean.
Muir has taught NCC classes for the past four years. In addition to teaching courses for the Communication Department in rhetoric and political communication, she has served as graduate coordinator and basic course director in the department.
