Federal Communications Commission Chair William Kennard unveils his new report, “Connecting the Globe: The Africa Initiative,” tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the Mason Hall Atrium. The report details plans to promote telecommunication development in Africa by expanding Internet capabilities in the region. The new initiative sets out to make the Internet a truly global network that will offer Africa a tool of liberation, education, and advancement in the global economy.
Communication professor Raymond Akwule, a strong supporter of the African Internet initiative, has traveled to six African countries as part of a team to help connect the continent to the information superhighway. The team of seven has worked in Gambia, Nigeria, Swaziland, Namibia, Ethiopia, and Burkina Faso to plan and implement strategies and to advise the countries on the regulation, policy, and technical aspects of the Internet.
