Rigorous Enforcement of Fire Lane Policies Begins

A recent review of George Mason fire safety systems and operations by local and state fire marshals identified a need for improvement in maintaining accessibility of emergency vehicles to fire lanes and other restricted areas around Fairfax Campus roadways and facilities.

Efforts are underway to inform the university community of troublesome areas through new signage and other announcements. These areas include Patriots Village and the PE Building, the Johnson Center circle and loading dock, the SUB I circle and Pohick Lane, Rivanna Lane behind King Hall and Enterprise Hall, the entrances to Presidents Park, and Chesapeake Lane.

In addition, University Police and Parking Services will begin active enforcement–24 hours a day, seven days a week–of all policies relating to fire lanes and other restricted areas. Towing will be enforced. Towed vehicles will be moved to Lot C (near the Police Station), and drivers can recover their vehicles after calling Parking Services at x32710 (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or University Police at x32810 (after hours and on weekends).

Cooperation from all members of the campus community is necessary to accomplish and maintain a solid safety record for the university, and to protect the safety and welfare of our community. For more information or to offer suggestions, contact University Services at x32840 or kbumgarn@gmu.edu.
