At the fall Information Technology Unit Projects Update on Oct. 21, ITU staff reported on the following projects:
Upgrade to Banner 8: the Banner software will be upgraded from version 7, offering a higher level of security. The upgrade is scheduled to be implemented in April 2010.
Wireless network: There is currently about 80 percent wireless coverage on the Fairfax Campus, with 100 percent coverage in the residence halls. ITU is in the process of adding wireless connectivity to the Prince William Campus.
Data Center/swing space: The new building on the Fairfax Campus is almost complete and will be ready for occupancy by the end of January 2010. The data center equipment will be shifted over in stages, with the complete relocation of the data center expected by May 2010.
Student e-mail: A Microsoft product called Outlook Live has been selected. A project team is now being formed. The system will provide 10GB for each student, with a 25MB capacity for attachments. A shared drive and calendar will also be available as part of the service. Alumni e-mail accounts will also be available.
ITU web site: The site will offer numerous enhancements to access ITU services. It is expected to go live in December.
myMason portal: Phase I of the portal is complete. Phase II will add functionality, especially with the implementation of a single sign-on for Patriot Web. Content is being added “almost every day,” according to John Prette, IT project manager. Nearly 400 groups are using the portal’s organizations feature.
Research portals: University Libraries is continuing to refine and add to these online resources, including a new feature called Mason Metafinders.
