The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I board of directors has appointed Tom O’Connor, assistant vice president/director of athletics, to its Management Council. The appointment is effective following this week’s annual NCAA convention in San Diego.
The Management Council makes recommendations to the board of directors on matters it deems appropriate, suggests policies to the board that are necessary to ensure the proper management of Division I, and recommends Division I championship policies and fiscal, competitive, and academic issues to the board. In addition, the council appoints members to and reviews the recommendations of the substructure of Division I, and develops and administers the annual budget of Division I with the approval of the board of directors.
O’Connor has more than 26 years of athletic administrative experience at four NCAA Division I institutions. Now in his sixth year at George Mason, O’Connor also has served as the athletic director at Loyola College, Santa Clara University, and St. Bonaventure University. His teams have made 40 NCAA appearances and have won three national championships. O’Connor has served on the NCAA Marketing, Basketball Marketing, and Men’s Basketball Rules Committees since 1997, and was a member of the Business/Finance Cabinet from 1997 to 1999. He also has served on various leadership committees of the Eastern College Athletic Association, the Colonial Athletic Association, and the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
