University Marks Passing of Emerita Professor Kilby

Emilia-Louise Kilby, Professor Emerita of Health and Physical Education, died Sept. 12 at the age of 86. At the time of her death she lived at Sunrise Assisted Living in Arlington, Va.
Kilby taught at Mason from 1972 to 1985.
According to an obituary in the Sept. 20, 2009, edition of the Washington Post, Kilby died of adult failure to thrive.
In 1992, Kilby became paralyzed below the waist as a result of a spinal malformation. However, within several years she was able to return to her favorite sport, swimming, which she did daily. She also led a morning stretching class at Sunrise.
Kilby graduated from what is now the University of Mary Washington and received a master’s degree in physical education from New York University and a doctorate from the University of Washington.
In addition to Mason, Kilby taught at the following institutions: American University of Beirut, Shepherd University, Western Washington University, the University of Washington, Bryn Mawr College and Averett University.
She has no immediate survivors.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 25, at 3 p.m. at Sunrise of Arlington, 2000 N. Glebe Rd, Arlington, Va. The phone number at Sunrise is 703-524-5300.
