Daniele Struppa, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), has appointed James Conant, Public and International Affairs, associate dean for financial management in CAS. Conant begins his new assignment on July 1. He succeeds Zita Tyer, who will leave the position at the end of the academic year.
Conant is currently serving as the associate chair for graduate studies in the Department of Public and International Affairs, where he has worked with the Master of Public Administration faculty to rebuild the department’s graduate degree program. During this time, enrollment in the program has grown almost 40 percent, despite the tightening of academic standards.
Conant brings both scholarship and professional experience to the new position. His academic expertise is in the area of state government financial management and budgeting. He has edited a book and published a number of articles and book chapters on the subject. He also has served as a consultant to public- and private-sector organizations on organizational strategy, strategic resource allocation, and process improvement.
Conant received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983. Before coming to George Mason in 1996, he taught at Rutgers University, New York University, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
