As someone who is described by her colleagues as exemplifying what a Mason employee should be – professional, friendly and willing to help – Annette Tallant has certainly earned her title as the August Employee of the Month.
Tallant, administrative assistant in the Office of the Provost, begins her day every morning at 7 a.m. and is responsible for providing direct administrative and operational support to Mason Provost Peter Stearns. Some of her specific responsibilities include assisting with scheduling, planning meetings and events, organizing materials for history classes that he teaches and following up with correspondence.
“Annette is a vital asset to this office and is a reliable and conscientious worker,” says Stearns. “Her dedication and willingness to take on new responsibilities is truly commendable. I can think of no one better deserving of this award than her.”
Although Tallant has only been at Mason for about 3 years, the university holds a special place in her heart because she is a direct descendant of George Mason. Having taken her children to visit Gunston Hall, the former home of Mason, many times through the years and teaching them about their ancestor, she was very excited when she began working at Mason.
“One of the best aspects of my position is the amount of variety that comes with it,” says Tallant. “Dr. Stearns is a very fascinating person whose mind never stops. It’s a challenge keeping up with him, but also interesting and inspiring to see how he operates.”
Her first job at Mason was in the School of Nursing where she was responsible for the day-to-day operations in the office and worked with undergraduate nursing students. After six months, she moved over to her current position in the Office of the Provost.
“Annette always represents the Provost’s Office to internal and external clientele with a calming demeanor and a great smile,” says Debbie Williams, administrative executive assistant to the Provost.
“She is a true professional in every sense of the word. Her spontaneous wit, encyclopedic knowledge of Mason and a cool, yet graceful efficiency are just a few of the qualities she possesses.”
When she found out that she had been chosen as the employee of the month, Tallant says she was both thrilled and flattered.
“Although I’ve only been a Mason for a short time, I was honored to be chosen as employee of the month,” says Tallant. “I have developed so many great friendships and am very fortunate to be a part of the university.”
According to Tallant, one of the things she enjoys most about working at Mason is being able to attend events and productions in the Center for the Arts. In addition, she praises Mason for its benefits and recognition program and dedication to having so many opportunities to recognize and award its employees.
As a native of Danville, Va., Tallant worked for the FBI as a paralegal specialist in the Freedom of Information area before coming to Mason. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her children, watching movies, reading and traveling, especially to Disney World in Orlando, Fla., where she and her daughter visit every year.
