Eliot Fisk appears with award-winning Turkish instrumentalist and vocalist Burhan Öçal in the Concert Hall on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m. Fisk stretches the realm of the classical guitar with remarkable collaborations, including a Flamenco guitarist, a castanet player, and an improvisational storyteller. WETA-FM radio commentator Dan DeVany leads an artistic discussion in the Ioasis coffee lounge on the Concert Hall’s Grand Tier at 7:15 p.m.
While Fisk’s recordings and concerts receive critical acclaim and international awards, he is happiest pursuing his ambition to create outreach programs for classical music in schools, churches, prisons, community centers, and anywhere he sees the need for enrichment. “I’m obsessed with this idea of trying to broaden the appeal [of classical music],” he says.
Öçal’s trademark finger drum solo explores an amazing breadth of sound and incredibly complex time signatures at the same time. A self-taught musician, he is adept at all Turkish percussion instruments and also plays a variety of Turkish string instruments.
