Final preparations are being made for this fall’s opening of the new Rappahannock River Parking Deck on the north end of the Fairfax Campus.

Mason is making strategic changes to the roadways surrounding the deck, which includes repaving a portion of University Drive (formerly known as the Patriot Circle Spur). The temporary road was created in the winter of 2008 to divert traffic around the construction zone. Now that the deck is nearly complete, a permanent surface can be put in place.

The repaving will take place on Tuesday, May 26, and Wednesday, May 27. During this time, traffic will be restricted to one lane. Drivers should expect delays along this road, so the use of alternate routes around campus is advised. The west side of Patriot Circle should be used to access University Drive via George Mason Boulevard.

Creating the Spur Road and construction of the Rappahannock River Parking Deck eliminated approximately 900 parking spaces of the former Lot F. But once the deck opens, the campus will boast 2,600 additional parking spaces.

Due to recent changes in traffic patterns north of campus – the permanent closure of a portion of University Drive and the imminent opening of George Mason Boulevard – the Patriot Circle Spur was officially named University Drive. The repaved version will remain connected to Patriot Circle, forming a “T intersection” near the southeast corner of the deck.

Though the portion of Patriot Circle directly south of the deck will eventually reopen, transportation officials anticipate vehicles will continue to use University Drive, connecting to George Mason Boulevard to resume traveling on Patriot Circle.
