The Mason baseball team has stormed through the Colonial Athletic Association this season, and the Patriots have found themselves nationally ranked this year for the first time in school history.

Today, a new challenge awaits as the CAA Tournament gets under way in Wilmington, N.C., and Mason will look for its first CAA title since 1992.

The Patriots, the top seed in the six-team double-elimination tournament, will take on sixth-seeded Delaware at noon to kick off the tournament. The two teams did not face each other in the regular season this year.

Live audio of all of Mason’s CAA Tournament games will be available on GoMason.com.

Mason is currently ranked 29 in the nation by the National College Baseball Writer’s Association and 30 by Collegiate Baseball. The Patriots, at 40-10, have the best winning percentage in the nation, and they are one of nine teams to reach 40 wins on the season.

Delaware, at 27-18, earned the final seed to the tournament by virtue of sweeping VCU in the season’s final weekend.

The Blue Hens will send Brian Rorick to the mound in the opener. He is 4-3 with a 4.99 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 83 innings. He is allowing a .279 batting average. Carlos Alonso leads the Blue Hens in batting with a .387 average, having started all 45 games. Bill Merkler has 15 home runs and 51 RBI with a .357 average. Ryan Cuneo has 16 homers and 54 RBI, both team highs, while batting .292.

As a team, Delaware is batting .324 with a 5.45 ERA and a .963 fielding percentage. Mason is batting .326 with a 4.15 ERA and a .973 fielding percentage. The ERA and fielding marks are the best in the conference, while the batting average is second.

Chris Henderson is batting .427 with 13 homers and 51 RBI. Scott Krieger leads the team with 18 homers and 76 RBI, and he’s batting .383. Justin Bour is batting .342 with 17 homers and 63 RBI. Ryan Soares also has 10 homers and is batting .330.
