Let the Celebration Begin: Grad Week ’09

In just a few short weeks, Mason’s graduating class of 2009 will don green caps and gowns and begin processing into the Patriot Center to celebrate many years of hard work before stepping into their futures.

But before that day rolls around, Mason’s graduating students are invited to take a break from the hustle and bustle of finishing up the year and final exams and have some fun during Grad Week, which begins May 8.

A complete schedule of activities is listed below.

Friday, May 8

Annual Alumni Association Grad Brunch and Movin’ On Fair

10 a.m. to noon, Johnson Center Dewberry Hall

Grads enjoy breakfast foods, meet members of the Alumni Association and decorate their graduation caps. At the Movin’ on Fair, Mason representatives from various offices will be available to let students know about opportunities for Mason grads. RSVP required.

Grub Crawl

7 p.m. to 2 a.m.; leave from Damon’s Restaurant in Student Union Building I

Students hop on a bus for a tour of local restaurants throughout Fairfax featuring special Mason appetizer discounts. After meeting up at Damon’s between 7 and 8 p.m. , students will depart on buses at 8 and 8:30 p.m. and return to Damon’s for the after-party at 12:30 and 1 a.m.

Saturday, May 9

Hard Times Café Pool Party

7 to 11 p.m., Hard Times Café, 4069 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax

Graduating students can enjoy free food and billiards in the back room at Hard Times Café.

Tuesday, May 12

Cruise on the Potomac

8 to 11 p.m., Potomac Riverboat Company Alexandria Dock

Tickets: $10 Mason grads; $20 non-Mason guests

Grads take a cruise aboard the Cherry Blossom, a re-creation of a 19th-century Victorian riverboat. Music and DJ Rush Hour; BBQ provided. Cash bar available. Boat boards at 7:45 p.m.

Wednesday, May 13

Honors Recognition Reception at Mathy House

5:30 p.m., Mathy House

Shuttle departs from Patriot Center at 5:15 p.m.

Commencement Rehearsal

7:30 p.m., Patriot Center

Senior Class Giving Party

8:30 p.m., Patriot Center concourse

Free happy hour with food, drinks and music. All seniors who make a gift of any amount will be invited to the Senior Class Giving Party. Seniors who make a donation of $20.09 will be invited to the party, have their name displayed on a Senior Giving plaque in the Johnson Center and receive a free Mason T-shirt.

Saturday, May 16

Free Bagels and Bubbles at Damon’s

8 a.m., Damon’s Restaurant in Student Union Building I

Graduating students are invited to enjoy a light breakfast and mimosas at Damon’s before the Commencement ceremony.

The Alumni Association welcomes new grads in a Commencement day pinning ceremony. The procession will feature Doc Nix and the Mason Mean Green Drumline.
