Another semester is winding down, and students are prepping to move out. There’s a lot of stress due to writing papers and taking finals, but the task of moving out can be just as daunting.
To alleviate some of the hassle, organizers of the third annual Patriot Pack Out suggest a solution: “Don’t Dump It, Donate It.”
The Patriot Pack Out is a recycling and community outreach initiative at Mason that asks everyone in the Mason community — particularly students moving out of the residence halls — to donate clothing, electronics, working appliances and nonperishable food. The event runs from May 7 to May 15.
“Patriot Pack Out not only makes it easy for students during move out, but it’s easy for everyone at Mason and in the surrounding communities to donate, especially if they’re already doing a little spring cleaning at home,” says Traci Claar, director of community relations.
“The event has become an annual tradition here at Mason. Each year it’s been a huge success — we’ve collected literally thousands of pounds of donations. This year promises to be the biggest year yet,” Claar says.
The Patriot Pack Out has been a success since it was begun three years ago, thanks to many donations and volunteers.
All items will be donated to two local nonprofit organizations: Food for Others and the Clock Tower Thrift Shop of Northern Virginia Family Service.
Several places on campus have been designated as official drop-off locations:
York River Corner: Liberty Square main lobby and B Wing first floor laundry room
Potomac Heights: main lobby
Presidents Park: Eisenhower Hall, Room 101
Dominion Hall, University Commons and Commonwealth Hall: main lobbies of Hanover Hall, Dominion and Commonwealth
Chesapeake: Main lobbies of Blue Ridge, Northern Neck, Piedmont, Shenandoah and Tidewater
Townhouses, Student Apartments and Patriots Village: student apartment #5, and near the outdoor dumpsters
To make it even easier for those who live off campus, volunteers have established drive-up donation hours. Drivers can pull up to the donation truck located behind Eisenhower Hall on Presidents Park Drive between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 8; Tuesday, May 12; and Thursday, May 14. Volunteers will be waiting to help unload vehicles. Donation receipts for tax deduction purposes will be given upon request.
Organizers are looking for volunteers to help pick up donated items at the various residence hall locations. The volunteers will ride along in Mason recycling staff’s pickup truck and transport the donations to the storage trailer. Mason employees may use their Volunteer Service leave for this purpose.
Each day has two shifts lasting no longer than two hours. Volunteers may select a specific shift by registering online at the Patriot Pack Out web site.
