Cindy Waddell, academic advisor in the School of Recreation, Health and Tourism (SRHT), has been chosen as Mason’s fifth Advisor of the Year. Waddell was chosen from a pool of 60 nominees.

“I feel very honored to be chosen. Some of the student comments that were made in the voting process were shared at the banquet, and it was very humbling,” says Waddell. “We only have about 800 students in SRHT, so I am also very proud that six out of the 60 nominees were from SRHT. Our department is very student-centered and we are really interested in their development as a student.”

Waddell has been working at Mason since 1997 and has been an advisor for three years. She helps students create a path to graduation in the most efficient and beneficial manner. Waddell also does career advising.

“It really runs the gamut; we talk about a lot of things,” says Waddell. “I like working with the students and having an opportunity to help them figure out what they really want to do.”

Waddell also serves as the SRHT internship coordinator. She helps guide students toward desired placements by recognizing where their skills lie and where they would fit best.

“I get to supervise the internships and interact with the students in the field. Observing their personal development is fun to watch,” says Waddell.

An academic advisor can be nominated for the Advisor of the Year award by any faculty or staff member, student or alumnus. The recipient is chosen based on the quality of the nominations, as opposed to simply the number of nominations received for that person.

The Selection Committee evaluates nominations based on the following criteria:

  • Caring, helpful attitude toward students
  • Availability to students, faculty or staff
  • Makes appropriate referrals
  • Knowledge of Mason’s regulations, policies and procedures
  • Supports student development through advising
  • Represents the spirit of Mason

Waddell earned a BA in Psychology from Mason and MA and PhD degrees in Kinesiology – Sport Psychology from the University of Maryland.
