The Mason Forensics Team placed second in the 32nd Annual American Forensic Association National Individual Events Tournament held at the University of Akron, April 3-5.

As one of only five schools in the history of the American Forensic Association to qualify students every year of the national tournament, Mason continues to demonstrate excellence. The most recent competition held last weekend was no exception.

Twenty-three Mason students traveled to Akron, Ohio, to compete with 1,478 other top forensics students in the nation at the national championships.

Of the 12 Mason students who advanced to elimination rounds, only one is a senior, and a freshman, Nick Bateman, was selected as the new national champion in Dramatic Interpretation. He is only the second freshman to ever win that event. Bateman also became only the second freshman top-10 overall speaker in the nation ever.

“This was a total team effort and I could not be more proud of this incredible group,” says forensics director Peter Pober.

“They were all the talk of the national tournament,” he adds. “One colleague approached me after the awards ceremony and called our students ‘the classiest team in the nation.’ They are; and with Patriot pride soaring I could not be happier for them.”
