No One Has ‘Swagger’ Like Mason

It’s Homecoming Week and the big block party and men’s basketball game against the Northeastern Huskies gets under way in less than five days. In between, a raft of events is offered to prime the Mason community.

Highlights of the week, which has the theme “No One Has Swagger Like Us,” follow. All events are free and held on the Fairfax Campus.

Monday, Feb. 9

  • Homecoming 2008 Kick Off

    Johnson Center Atrium, noon to 1 p.m.

    Free food and entertainment; meet contestants for the Mr. and Ms. Mason Pageant.

  • Can-Struction

    North Plaza, 1:30 to 4:40 p.m.

    Mason organizations compete to build the most original structure from canned food and boxes of nonperishable items.

  • Swagger of a Champion Pageant

    Johnson Center Dewberry Hall, 8 to 10 p.m.

    Mr. and Ms. Mason contestants show off their style.

Tuesday, Feb. 10

  • Pep Rally

    Johnson Center Atrium, noon to 1 p.m.

    Meet the men’s basketball team. Giveaways!

  • Talent Show

    Student Union Building II Ballroom, 8 to 10 p.m.

    Grand prize is $100.

Wednesday, Feb. 11

  • Laser tag

    Johnson Center, Dewberry Hall, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

  • Homecoming dance

    Student Union Building II Ballroom, 8 p.m. to midnight

    With DJ Kwest.

Thursday, Feb. 12

  • Photo T-shirt Bear

    Johnson Center, News Center, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    Give your sweetheart a $10 teddy bear with your picture or a premade design printed on its T-shirt.

  • Faculty-Staff alumni reception

    3 to 4:30 p.m., Johnson Center, Alumni Affairs office

    For alumni who work at Mason.

  • Comedy Show with Kyle Grooms

    Johnson Center Bistro, 9:30 to 11 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 13

  • Scavenger Hunt

    Johnson Center, Patriot Corner, noon to 2 p.m.

  • Alumni Association Beer Tasting

    George’s Restaurant, Johnson Center, 3rd Floor, 7 to 9 p.m.

    Capital City Brewing Company’s beers will be featured. The cost is $25 per person; includes beer tasting, refreshments and a commemorative tasting glass. Guests must be 21 years of age or older to attend.

  • Homecoming Concert

    Johnson Center Bistro, 9 p.m. to midnight

    Featuring Pat McGee. The show is free to students with their Mason ID and $5 at the door for all others.

Saturday, Feb. 14

  • Pregame Block Party

    Parking Lot A, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

    Heated tent, Block Party competitions, family-friendly area, pep rally with appearances by the Masonettes, Mason cheerleaders, and contests: pie-eating, swagger, car decorating, many more.

  • Patriot’s Basketball

    Mason Patriots vs. Northeastern Huskies

    Patriot Center, noon

    Students get into the game free with a valid ID. Half-price alumni tickets are available for $7 per ticket (processing fees apply). Visit, and complete the RSVP form to receive access to tickets.
