Center for History and New Media (CHNM) “Making the History of 1989”: chmn.gmu.edu/1989/.

What makes it special/better:

The site brings to fruition a project that has been in development since 2006 under a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

People involved:

  • T. Mills Kelly (executive producer and principal investigator) is associate director of the Center for History and New Media and an associate professor in the Department of History and Art History.

  • Kelly Schrum (project codirector) is director of educational projects at the Center for History and New Media and associate research professor in the Department of History and Art History.

  • Matthew Romaniello (associate director) is assistant professor in the Department of History at the University of Hawaii.

In addition, the project team included graduate students, scholars, writers and editors from Mason and around the country — some 40 people altogether.

Institutional collaborators were:

Cold War International History Project of the Woodrow Wilson Center

German Historical Institute, Washington, D.C.

National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

National Security Archive

University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Special Collections

Wende Museum, Culver City, Calif.

For more information about the project’s inception, see the Gazette story.
