Mason made a clean sweep of the Colonial Athletic Association’s weekly wrestling awards as sophomore 197-pounder Cayle Byers was named the CAA Wrestler of the Week and freshman 174-pounder Mendbagana Tovuujav earned Rookie of the Week honors.
The awards took into account all competition between Dec. 10 and Jan. 4.
Byers, a native of Chugiak, Alaska, won four of five bouts at the 2008 Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30 on his way to finishing as the runner-up in his weight class.
He also won all three of his matches at the ODU Quad Meet, where he defeated the 10th-ranked 197-pounder from Purdue, Logan Brown, in the second overtime period.
He also defeated the 13th-ranked Jesse Strawn of ODU in a CAA dual. Byers is currently ranked sixth by InterMat and seventh by Amateur Wrestling News.
Tovuujav, a freshman from Ulaanbaatar City, Mongolia (St. Benedict’s Prep), jumped up from sixth in the CAA to 17th in the nation at 174 pounds.
He placed fourth at the Southern Scuffle, winning five of seven bouts before posting a 2-1 record at the ODU Quad. He defeated the second-ranked 174-pound wrestler in the CAA, Eric Decker of Old Dominion, in his first conference dual.
Splitting Wrestler of the Week honors with Byers were Josh Patterson of Binghamton and Lou Ruggirello of Hofstra. Both finished as runners-up in their respective weight classes at the Southern Scuffle.
