Mason junior midfielder Richard Edgar was one of six recipients of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Scholar-Athlete Award for the fall sports season. Edgar was the award winner for men’s soccer on the strength of an impressive 3.96 GPA while majoring in psychology.
In the classroom, Edgar is a Dean’s List student and a George Mason Scholar-Athlete Award winner. He is also a two-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award.
On the field, Edgar was selected to the All-CAA second team this season after contributing two goals and an assist for a Patriots’ squad that captured their first CAA championship since 1989 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual national champion Maryland.
Edgar was also a Third-Team All-CAA pick in 2007 and made the league’s All-Rookie team in 2006. He has been a starter in every match during his career at Mason.
Nominees for the award must be a starter or important reserve on their team and must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20. The winners were selected by a vote of the sports information directors at each CAA institution.
CAA Scholar-Athlete Awards were also announced for men’s cross country, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball.
