As the academic administrative specialist in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mery Tucker, Mason’s Employee of the Month for December, has managed to juggle multiple tasks and assignments in an office of about 18 faculty and staff members as well as a large number of undergraduate and graduate students.

“Mery is a dedicated employee and has established herself as vital to the everyday operation, continuing development and success of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department,” says Gregory Foster, chair and professor in the department and Tucker’s supervisor.

“She is tireless, friendly and immensely upbeat and deserves recognition for her assiduous work habits, dedication, outgoing demeanor and willingness to do whatever it takes to accomplish tasks and assist others.”

As the sole administrative specialist in the office, Tucker ‘runs the show’ and actually performs the work of two or three individuals on any given day. During a typical day, she receives numerous requests from faculty, staff and students. Some of her responsibilities include scheduling rooms, filling out forms, ordering textbooks and inputting data.

Tucker also plans and coordinates every department-wide event, including lunches for retiring employees, the annual student awards ceremony and special graduation events. In addition, Tucker deals with a variety of people, from chemistry students to book sales representatives, seminar speakers and job seekers.

Tucker says of her daily work, “Even though it can be demanding at times and I am always getting requests from someone, I do my best to please everyone. I don’t mind stopping what I’m doing to help someone out,” says Tucker.

According to Tucker, one of the most enjoyable aspects of her job is meeting and befriending people with whom she comes in contact. In addition, she considers Mason a wonderful place to work because of how often she and other employees are recognized for their hard work.

“Everyone I’ve come in contact with at Mason has been so nice. I’ve made so many friends working here,” says Tucker. “The students, especially, are great. I like to think of myself as a mother to them.”

When she found out she had been chosen as the employee of the month, Tucker says she was in complete shock and felt very honored and proud to work at Mason.

“Mery has demonstrated that she is willing to accept challenges and effect changes,” says Gerald Weatherspoon, associate professor of chemistry. “Her creativity, perseverance and overall desire to learn and teach others how to multitask and enjoy life are somewhat contagious.”

Tucker joined Mason nearly four years ago after working at the Virginia Employment Commission for 12 years. When she first came to Mason, she worked as an administrative specialist in the College of Education and Human Development.

In her free time, Tucker enjoys playing tennis and golf, traveling with her husband and especially gardening.
