At approximately 6 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23, four Mason students were involved in a car accident in Prince George’s County, Md. As a result of this accident, sophomore biology major Alana Melanie Williams, a resident of Blue Ridge Hall on the Fairfax Campus, lost her life. The remaining three students survived and remain under a doctor’s care.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the residents involved in this tragic accident. As a community, we need to be thoughtful in our discussions. Please refrain from speculation and respect the privacy and needs of those students involved and affected by this tragedy,” urged Brian Davis, interim director of the Office of Housing and Residence Life, in a letter sent to students in the residence halls.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) staff members are aware of the situation and are an excellent resource to help students to process emotions or listen to concerns. The CAPS office can be contacted at 703-993-2380 or see the web site.
A candlelight vigil to celebrate the life of Alana Melanie Williams was held on Nov. 24 in the Johnson Center Cinema.
