Mason Athletics has announced the schedules for men’s and women’s basketball. The teams will host Mason Madness on Oct. 17, the first official day practice is allowed. Doors at the Patriot Center open at 9 p.m. for this free evening of activities.
The Mason men’s basketball team, who lead the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in wins, conference wins and postseason wins over the past decade, start action this fall with head coach Jim Larranaga in his 12th season at Mason.
An exhibition game against Randolph-Macon on Nov. 5 at the Patriot Center at 7 p.m. will start the ball rolling. Then the team will begin the 2008-09 campaign with three of its first four contests on the road.
The Patriots will open the season at Vermont on Nov. 15 before starting the home portion of their schedule on Nov. 17 against Brown. Mason will also host a 2008 NCAA Tournament Participant and face five nonconference opponents that won 18 or more games last season.
The Patriots will play six times in November, including home games against Mount St. Mary’s and Ohio. There’s also a two-game road trip to Hampton and East Carolina.
In December, Mason will play five times, including its first Colonial Athletic Association game, a Dec. 6 trip to Drexel. The Patriots will also host Radford and Tulane in December.
In January, Mason will host three of its biggest rivals: UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion and James Madison. All three of those contests will be on Saturdays.
The Patriots will also host Georgia State and Delaware in midweek contests. Road games in January include Towson, Northeastern, Old Dominion and Mason’s only regular-season meetings with William & Mary and VCU.
The Patriots will play their Homecoming Game on February Feb. 14 against Northeastern. On Feb. 21, the Patriots will travel to their ESPN BracketBuster opponent, which will be announced earlier that month.
Feb. 28 is Senior Night, when Mason closes out the regular season at home against Towson. Other home games in February include Drexel and Hofstra; Mason will face James Madison, Delaware and UNC Wilmington on the road.
The CAA Tournament will once again be held at the Richmond Coliseum from March 6-9. Game times and television will be announced in the future.

A total of 11 nonconference games, including home contests against in-state foes Richmond and Virginia Tech, along with the challenging CAA schedule, highlight the Mason women’s basketball team’s 2008-09 season slate of games.
“We are extremely excited about the 2008-09 schedule,” says head coach Jeri Porter, who is beginning her first season at the helm of the Mason women’s program after six successful seasons at Radford.
“The 11-game nonconference schedule provides us with the type of competition that we will need each night to prepare us for an extremely tough CAA schedule.”
Mason will play 29 games in 2008-09, including 14 home games at the Patriot Center. The Patriots open with 10 out-of-conference matchups before kicking off CAA play at home on Jan. 4 against James Madison.
The season opens with a Friday night game against Patriot League foe Bucknell on Nov. 14. Two days later, the Patriots face Richmond at 2 p.m., followed by a short road trip on Nov. 19 to UMBC for a 7 p.m. matchup.
On Sunday, Nov. 23, Mason will entertain its in-state rivals, the Virginia Tech Hokies, for a 2 p.m. tilt at the Patriot Center. The two teams meet for the first time in 10 years.
After a five-game road trip, Mason has its final non-conference tuneup of the year when it hosts Appalachian State on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
The Patriots begin the new calendar year with an old foe, squaring off against the Dukes of James Madison on Jan. 4 to kick off conference play. Two days later, St. Joseph’s visits the Patriot Center for a Tuesday night game, Mason’s final non-CAA contest of the season.
From then on, the Patriots will face each of the 11 other CAA members as they position themselves for a run at the conference title.
The 2009 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship shifts locations this season to JMU’s Convocation Center in Harrisonburg, Va., from March 12-15, as an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship is on the line.
