Mason’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) and Center for the Arts announce the third annual Arts, by George! benefit that supports student scholarships in CVPA and the Great Performances at Mason series.

The evening begins by showcasing the remarkable artistic talents of Mason students and faculty and culminates with a performance by Tony Award-winning Broadway artist Brian Stokes Mitchell.

Supported by many local donors and businesses, Arts, by George! will be held on Mason’s Fairfax Campus on Saturday, Sept. 27, beginning at 5 p.m.

Arts, by George! is a unique evening of music, dance, theater, visual art and creative cuisine, celebrating the excellence of the arts at Mason. Participants will embark on an artistic journey winding through CVPA’s studios, while sampling delicacies and enjoying artistic presentations by Mason students.

These young artists — musicians, actors, dancers and visual artists — are presenting some of their “works in progress.” At 8 p.m., guests will arrive in the Concert Hall for Mitchell’s performance.

“Arts, by George! is truly a practical realization of the integration of the three components that comprise the arts at Mason: education, professional performances and community involvement,” says Bill Reeder, CVPA dean.

This year Arts, by George! will include a silent auction offering an assortment of arts experiences and items. The silent auction is open to Arts, by George! sponsors, ticket buyers and guests. A final and complete list of auction items with minimum bids will be sent with event tickets.

Some of the items that will be up for auction include student and faculty artwork, a one-week vacation at Bald Head Island, a Center for the Arts backstage behind-the-scenes technical tour, a one-hour instrumental lesson in saxophone, flute or guitar with a Mason faculty member, a Halloween 2008 costume rental from the Mason costume shop and an afternoon of golf at the Country Club of Fairfax with Dean Reeder.

To top off the evening, patrons will be treated to timeless show tunes, ballads and classic loves songs like “Embraceable You,” “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” and the showstopper “The Impossible Dream,” performed by Mitchell.

Mitchell has enjoyed a rich career on Broadway, television and film and has received numerous accolades for his work, including a Tony Award for “Kiss Me, Kate” and Tony nominations for “Man of La Mancha,” “Ragtime” and “King Hedley II.” He has also appeared in television roles on “Trapper John, M.D.,” “Crossing Jordan” and “Frasier.”

Tickets for Arts, by George! are $200 per person. To order tickets or inquire about sponsorship opportunities and benefits, visit the web site.
