This weekend’s Virginia sales tax holiday on school supplies is a perfect time to purchase and donate to the annual back-to-school supplies drive, Supply Our Students.
Begun in 2001, this program has expanded every year and has supplied more than 15,000 items to elementary school children in Fairfax County, Va. This year, the Department of Public and International Affairs (PIA) is sponsoring the drive.
The collected supplies – new pens, pencils, notebooks, binders, crayons, markers, highlighters, loose-leaf paper, folders and new and gently used backpacks and book bags – are donated to Fairfax County Public Schools to be discreetly distributed to children who receive free and reduced-cost lunches.
This year, the Mason office or group collecting the most supplies by Aug. 31 will receive a gift basket of snacks as a reward for their contribution to the Fairfax County children in need.
The collected supplies can be delivered to Robinson Hall A, Room 201, along with a list of the supplies and number.
Contact Lori Petterson in PIA, or call 703-993-1410 for more information about the Supply Our Students program.
During the sales tax holiday, Aug. 1 to 3, purchases of qualifying school supplies selling for $20 or less per item, and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item are exempt from Virginia sales tax.
